State Hospital

The Topeka State Hospital building is no more as of 2010. Just recently the decision was made to tear it down. This particular structure had the most character and is the most familiar of all the building on the 80 acres of land that the hospital is built on. The same property hosts a cemetery of approximately 1200 people that have been laid to rest since the facility opened in 1879. The State Hospital has a quilted past of everything from being a state of the art facility for the mentally Ill to a terrible history of unattended patients, rape and abuse, never the less this is a part of the history of Topeka that will be missed.

On May 17th 1997 the doors were officially closed and so was the chapter of history for the State Hospital. I hope that through the images found here and the memories that will continue to echo from those that remember its better days the history of the Kansas State Hospital will never be forgotten. It is very tough for some to let go of our history here in Topeka, lets keep sharing and telling those story's so that it never fades.
